RSPB NI are recruiting a Warden to work with the Site Manager Area East NI to manage designated habitats for seabirds and water birds at RSPB's four Belfast Harbour Reserve sites, two Larne Lough sites and at Carlingford Lough.

The RSPB Area East NI team are seeking a competent and suitably qualified enthusiastic person to maintain habitats in accordance with future self-written and existing management plans and develop these reserves to achieve optimum target species populations. The ideal candidate will enjoy working with the Belfast Window on Wildlife Visitor Experience Manager to manage visitor infrastructure on the sites to a very high standard in order to deliver a consistent excellent visitor experience.

The Role

The Warden will report to the Site Manager and take advice from the Senior Reserves Ecologist and Health & Safety Manager to be responsible for the effective and efficient day to day running of RSPB Belfast Harbour, Larne Lough and Carlingford Lough Reserves including Belfast Window on Wildlife (WoW), Harbour Meadows, Holywood Banks and Whitehouse Lagoon; Blue Circle Island and Swan Island on Larne Lough and Green Island at Carlingford Lough.

The Warden will take a lead role in the implementation of the estate, livestock and habitat management, management plan delivery, species and habitat monitoring and visitor services.

The Belfast Harbour Reserves Warden will be responsible for implementing the reserves management plans to include habitat management, record keeping and seasonal livestock/grazing where relevant to ensure delivery of site and RSPB objectives and compliance obligations.

The warden will:

  • Manage non-residential volunteers to ensure delivery of sites' work programmes. This includes ensuring that they are trained and equipped properly to work safely.
  • Undertake and oversee species/habitat survey and monitoring work on the sites to ensure delivery of sites' objectives.
  • Undertake and oversee the maintenance of the reserve estate (including machinery where relevant) to ensure efficient and safe operation and use to meet the RSPB sites' Health & Safety and other obligations.
  • Ensure the reserve is managed in accordance with best practise with respect to Health and Safety, environmental management and legal compliance of conservation and land management operations.
  • Supervise contractors to carry out work on site safely and legally to deliver the management plan targets.
  • Assist in the delivery of visitor services activities to deliver the reserve's targets.
  • Manage medium and small projects using the RSPB's Project Management Framework to achieve site/s objectives/delivery of management plan objectives.
  • Ensure good relations at all times with neighbours, graziers, external organisations and the general public to facilitate delivery of site/s and RSPB's objectives.

What we need from you:

Essential Knowledge and experience

  • Proven track record of land especially nature conservation management.
  • Biological monitoring experience of water birds and seabirds and knowledge of their habitats.
  • Health & Safety applying to site management (e.g. risk assessments).
  • Knowledge of Area of Scientific Interest (ASSI), Special Protected Area (SPA) and Special Area of Conservation (SAC) requirements (eg agricultural & environmental legislation) Essential skills.
  • Communication and interpersonal experience working with contractors.
  • Individual and team management skills working with staff and volunteers.
  • Estate management.
  • Record keeping/data management.
  • Organisational including time management and prioritisation.
  • Problem solving Desirable skills and experience.
  • Machinery operations, equipment servicing.
  • Working with visitors.
  • IT and database (Merlin).
